How to define nicotine strength in e-liquid
Before you know how strong you want your e-liquid, it’s a good idea to understand how nicotine in e-liquid is measured and recorded. The strength of nicotine is recorded as milligrams of nicotine in every millilitre of e-liquid, often recorded as mg/ml.
Some companies will record it as the percent per solution, so rather than seeing 24mg/ml, you’ll see 2.4% instead. It’s the same strength but just recorded differently.

The majority of e-liquids will come in one of the following strengths:
- Zero - 0mg/ml: Zero nicotine e-liquids contain no nicotine. They provide a convenient solution for people who’ve already quit smoking but still have an oral fixation.
- Low – 6mg/ml: If you’re looking for an enjoyable e-liquid with the smallest possible amounts of e-liquid, going for a low strength will provide you with everything you need.
- Medium – 18mg/ml: This amount of nicotine is generally considered a medium strength in e-liquid, and will deliver the perfect amount of nicotine to former smokers.
- High – 24mg/ml: With a high amount of nicotine, this strength is often used by former heavy smokers who would typically smoke a pack of cigarettes every day.
What were your tobacco smoking habits like?
Whilst it’s important to understand the differing strengths of e-liquid when you’re trying to figure out which would work best for you, looking at your smoking habits will also give you a good indication.
Generally, light smokers who tended to smoke a no more than a few cigarettes on a daily basis will find that a low nicotine e-liquid works really well to satisfy their cravings, whereas heavy smokers on multiple packs a day will have to use a strong nicotine level to get enough nicotine.
How often do you smoke?
For people who tend to take a few drags, here and there, of a cigarette may want higher levels of nicotine in their e-liquid to quickly satisfy their cravings. Alternatively, if you like to vape throughout the day, a weaker e-liquid has less chance of causing a nicotine overdose, making you sick.
Many people use different strengths of e-liquid throughout the day, depending on the situation. It’s not uncommon to have a weaker e-liquid in the mornings and a stronger one for the evening.
Whilst you’re experimenting with different strengths, it’s wise to have both stronger and weaker e-liquids to hand.
Strong e-liquids aren’t necessarily better
You may be tempted to buy a strong e-liquid, remembering the uncomfortable withdrawal from cigarettes, but you don’t need to worry about this at all.
With an e-cigarette, you’ll have plenty of nicotine and you won’t suffer any withdrawal symptoms when you switch from traditional cigarettes.

So which strength of nicotine should you choose?
Generally, choosing a strength of e-liquid that matches your nicotine intake when smoking traditional cigarettes is the best way to determine your strength of e-liquid. This will allow you to avoid ‘compensation vaping’ as a way to make up for lower levels of nicotine (at which point, you end up consuming more nicotine than you normally would).
You may also find you still experience cravings if your e-liquid is weaker, encouraging you to go back to traditional smoking.
If you choose a strength of e-liquid that’s stronger than your usual intake of nicotine, you’ll find yourself overloading your body with nicotine, increasing your chances of overdosing and the throat hit will be unpleasant, possibly encouraging you to take up traditional smoking once more.
Finding a strength of e-liquid that matches your traditional nicotine intake takes a fair amount of trial and error, and you could find you prefer different strengths at different times of the day.
